Microsoft has debuted Windows Phone 8, the latest version of the company’s smartphone operating system. Built around its signature Live Tiles, Windows Phone 8 lets people pin the people, apps, and information they care about to their Start Screen to create a truly personal phone experience. Live Tiles show users’ updates as they happen – from the location of their next appointment to new tweets, texts or pictures from their friends.

As a part of today’s announcement, Microsoft revealed several new features, including Kid’s Corner and Rooms, along with details and pricing for a range of beautiful new smartphones from Samsung, Nokia and HTC, each with their own differentiated design, colors and features. Mom, actress and entrepreneur Jessica Alba joined Microsoft onstage to share her unique Start Screen and how she uses Windows Phone 8.

In addition to Live Tiles, Windows Phone 8 offers:

  • Top Apps – The Windows Phone Store has 120,000 apps to choose from, with hundreds added every day. Hits coming this holiday include Angry Birds, Star Wars, Cut the Rope, Experiments, Disney’s Where’s My Water, LivingSocial, Temple Run, Urbanspoon and many more.

  • Kid-Proofing – Kid’s Corner alleviates the stress of applying various settings to “kid-proof” parents’ devices. This new, exclusive feature provides a protected place for kids to play, displaying only apps and content already chosen by parents.

  • Rooms – The Rooms feature allows you to create groups of people (college friends, fantasy football leagues, your family) and easily connect with them in a private way. Share calendars, photos, your location and send notes in an ongoing conversation with only those invited.

  • Always-on, Premium Skype Experience – Download the Skype app and it’s easy to make and receive Skype calls. Skype calls can also be made over WiFi.

  • Data Sense – This new feature allows users to surf the web and do more on their data plan because it provides usage updates, as customers near their data limits, and automatically adjusts app usage, so users get the most out of their data plans.

  • Wallet – With the new wallet feature, store important debit, credit, loyalty and membership card information, fully encrypted on the phone.
