Microsoft Offers New Videos and Tips for Data Privacy Day to Help People Better Manage Their Privacy

Brendon Lynch, Chief Privacy Officer at Microsoft

Changes to online services’ privacy policies seem to occur daily. After a while, it can be hard to keep up with all of the changes and know exactly what personal information is being shared on the Internet. So it’s no surprise people may feel like they have little to no control over the data companies gather about them while they browse the Web or use online services. Knowing what their privacy options are online can help people make better choices and feel more in control of their online information.

To mark Data Privacy Day 2013, Microsoft is releasing new survey results which reflect peoples’ perceptions about how their information is used online, as well as a video series called “Privacy in Action” to help people better manage their personal information. The video series, as well as other privacy tips and guidance, can be seen at microsoft.com/yourprivacy.

Highlights of the research include:

  • Only four in 10 surveyed feel confident about how to protect their online privacy;

  • 39 percent said they are turning to friends and family, as well as company privacy statements, as their top source for privacy information; and

  • 32 percent said they are paying attention to companies’ privacy reputations, track records, and policies when choosing which websites to visit or services to use.
